Osmon, Willis E.

A native of McVille, North Dakota, Mr. Osmon is a 1942 graduate of Valley City State College. He received his Master's Degree from the University of Northern Colorado and did advanced work at the University of California. He began his coaching career at Valley City High School. After brief coaching stints at Jamestown High School and Laramie, Wyoming, he became head basketball coach at Valley City State College in 1947 and assumed the duties of Athletic Director the following year. Teams coached by Bill Osmon won a total of 24 conference championships in four different sports. Bill Osmon retired from the basketball coaching ranks in 1969 to devote full attention to the chores of Athletic Director. He served as chairman of NAIA District 12 for 20 years and in 1979 was named to the NAIA Hall o Fame. Bills dedication to his work earned him the 1981 Special Achievement Award from the North Dakota Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. Bill Osmon retired December 31, 1982, after serving Valley City State College for 35 years as Coach, teacher and Athletic Director. The Valley City State College Filedhouse was officially named the W.E. Osmon Building for Physical Education on October 15, 1983.
