Awarded in 2025
Bruce Babcock graduated from Valley City State University (VCSU) in 1978, earning majors in Chemistry, Mathematics, and Earth and Environmental Science, along with a minor in Physics. During his time at VCSU, Bruce lettered in both football and track, setting his foundation for a lifelong commitment to athletics and community. He later pursued an advanced education, receiving a Master of Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Florida and graduating from the USAF Air Command and Staff College.
Babcock is a retired United States Air Force Reserve Lieutenant Colonel, serving a total of 28 years in both active duty and the reserves. He retired from the USAFR in April 2007, having accumulated a total of 1,500 military flying hours.
He also enjoyed a distinguished career with Delta Airlines, retiring in 2021 after 30 years of service. His final flying base was Los Angeles, where he served as a Boeing 777 First Officer, primarily flying routes to Asia. Throughout his career, Babcock held positions as Captain and First Officer on various aircraft. He currently has over 20,000 civilian flying hours.
His support began with a gift to the Alumni Campaign in 1992, and he has continued giving ever since. As an Impact Scholarship donor, Babcock provides meaningful support to VCSU student-athletes, ensuring that students have the resources and opportunities to succeed both on and off the field.
He has also grabbed an oar and led for advocacy by his leadership and development of the Oarsmen Club. He has been an active member since its inception; served on the Advisory Board since 2018; and is a current executive board member as well as membership chair since 2021. Through his consistent presence at events, his work to encourage others to give, and his own example of loyal support, Babcock has become a cornerstone of the Oarsmen Club and a tireless advocate for VCSU.
Being a VCSU graduate has allowed Bruce to maintain lasting connections with former classmates and teammates, a network that has remained important to him throughout his life and career. His pride in being a Viking is unwavering, and he continues to embody the “Be Viking” spirit, considering his VCSU roots to be a special part of his identity. Football and Track brought him to VCSU, and now VCSU brings him home.
Bruce’s fondest memory of his time at VCSU centers around homecoming week. He recalls the excitement that was built throughout the week, the camaraderie of fraternity and sorority float building, the spirited pep rallies, and engaging activities at the Student Center. The parade and influx of new friends and visitors for the football game made homecoming an unforgettable experience. As a football player, the homecoming game was always one of the most significant events of the season. Bruce cherishes having those experiences and still enjoys returning each year.
Bruce and his wife, Karyn, currently reside in Groton, SD.
